i really like this:) the sinister facial expression coupled with the threatening colours of the background gives the whole piece rather baleful air - is there meant to be a story behined it?

I can only imagine how many black pastels were used on this piece. I admire the sharp contrast that the background brings, well done :D

wait a minute-this could have been done on black paper. I did not think of that until just now! lol

Right the first time. Used expensive nice pastels for the fleshtones, and orderd in a bunch of cheap blacks for obvious reasons.

Thanks for the compliment.

As far as ideas behind the piece, I like expressive red skys alot because of all the ambiguity it has. It has a sort of apocolyptic feel wich implys the end of all things, or it could be a sunrise, wich would imply the start of something new. I'm holding the letter which I also thought had more than one side to it, as I could be recieving or delivering it. Dealing with the role of the artist, a someone who delivers a message or deals with communication.

Sorry I didn't respond for so long :/

what kind of pastels did you use? I love how you rendered the face.

For the face and hands, and some of the warm backround I used Sennelier pastels. I can't recommend them enough, they were so soft and easy to blend. For the black and a lot of the red I used cheaper Van Gough pastels, that were alot harder and not that good. They would cut right through any layers of sennelier that made an interesting effect sometimes though.
